Looking for a job anywhere (English-Speaking area is only criterion)

I am about to graduate with my M.S. in I/O Psychology and am currently looking for a job pretty much anywhere. My interests are in selection, OD, and performance management.... anyone hear or know of anything? I don't have tons of experience, so I'm looking for an entry-level or very little experience position. Relocation is not an issue; anywhere from Australia to Alaska... I appreciate any help!

Warm Sun-Shiny Place

My New Year’s resolution is to move to a place where the weather is nice and sunny year-round… I’m home in South Florida for the holidays writing this while my family hustles and bustles around me – corralling the puppy, mowing the lawn, lounging by the pool, and it occurs to me that most people don’t live in a place where you can barbeque outside in January without long underwear and a down jacket. This trip home had made me think about the impact of where you live and how the weather can affec… Continue

When Economy Gets Tough, Exercise.

The economy is tanking, unemployment is affecting friends and family, and the gray skies of winter are upon us. Add to the mix stress over the upcoming holidays and it’s easy to see how these pressures weigh you down with reasons not to exercise, especially when your gut is telling you to work longer hours than ever to keep your competitive edge, if not your job. But don’t listen to the instinct to hibernate or overwork – cutting back on exercise is not the answer.

Even though times are tough,… Continue

Ken Blanchard

Ken Blanchard is one of the most influential OD experts in the world and is known for his work in the fields of leadership and management. He has written numerous books about almost every topic related to OD. Furthermore, he has videos of presentations that are very educational for students as well as professionals. I strongly recommend I/O students to get familiar with his work.

Question of the week...

Here is a question I picked up this week at the SHRM annual meeting at a session I attended by Greg Smith. This is one you should ask every one of the people who work for you --- even ask it of yourself .

"What is it that you are over due?" It could be a raise, the next new computer, more time with my boss, or maybe even a performance review. If you don't ask, you will not know what your people feel that they are missing or being left out of.

How to handle a telephone request for references

What should supervisors or managers do when they receive a telephone call requesting information on an existing or former employee?

1. Request the identity of the caller. Take the caller's name and telephone number so that the information provided by the caller can be confirmed as accurate. (Instead of giving reference immediately, tell the caller you will call them back after you get approval from the employee or ex-employee to release information.)
2. Ask why the information is being sought.…

The New Big Lie On Application Blanks And Resumes

Desperate applicants do desperate things and now we have the new big lie. It is an new twist on an old lie. Applicants for jobs are no longer inflating their salary, job title, education and responsibilities --- they are deflating them. Since many mangers do not want to hire people who they feel are over-qualified and many applicants are looking for any job just to have some kind of income, we're seeing applicants report a lower salary than they were making, changing job titles, and leaving degr…

If your company went out of business tomorrow, who would miss you and why?

The headlining question came from a great post on the Harvard Business Review website.

My spin on it is: "If you did not come to work tomorrow, who would miss you and why?"

What Makes a Bad Boss?

From a recent poll conducted at About.com.

Top 5 things that make a bad boss:

1. The manager provides little direction.
2. The manager offers little or no recognition for success and hard work.
3. The manager is indecisive and seemingly changes direction at whim.
4. The manager micromanages and nit-picks your work.
5. The manager belittles and puts down staff.
